Poll of employees leads to a change
LAS VEGAS - Effective July 1, 2011, Sunrise and Sunrise Children’s Hospital are proud to announce it will now be a tobacco-free campus, prohibiting the use of tobacco products on any part of the campus inside or outside.
"This effort aligns directly with our mission to improve the health of the community," said Sylvia Young, President and CEO of Sunrise Hospital and Sunrise Children’s Hospital. "This change is the result of an overwhelming request from our employees to make our campus tobacco-free."
More than 2,300 of Sunrise employees participated in a survey on the subject and more than 77% stated they wanted Sunrise to be a tobacco-free campus. This change will benefit the health of all employees, physicians, patients, visitors, and the general community.
Every year in the U.S. more than 392,000 people die from tobacco-caused disease, making it the leading cause of preventable death, according to the American Lung Association. Another 50,000 people die from exposure to secondhand smoke.
