Volunteer Services at Sunrise Hospital & Medical and Sunrise Children's Hospital provide enhanced customer service to patients, visitors and staff.

Adult Volunteer Program

We welcome Adult Volunteers, age 18 and over, year round. Applicants must be willing to commit to 4 service hours per week for 6 months and a minimum of 100 service hours. Volunteer opportunities include service in clinical, clerical and customer service areas. We do not provide observing, internship or shadowing opportunities.

Pet Therapy Program

Pet Therapy volunteers bring their certified pet therapy animals in at a regularly scheduled time to meet patients and visitors with the goal of helping improve patient’s emotional and social wellbeing along with their cognitive functions. Pet Therapy interactions play a vital role in boosting our employee’s morale.

Medical Explorer Program

The Medical Explorer Program is for high school students 15 – 17 years old who are interested in Healthcare Careers. Whether you already know what occupation you would like to pursue or you have not decided on a specific career field yet, through the Medical Explorer Program, you will have the opportunity to learn about various careers, participate in hands – on activities and meet with dedicated healthcare professionals. The Explorer Program promotes personal growth through character development, communication skills, career planning and more.

Participants are required to attend 75 % of the post activities, complete 16 volunteer service hours per month during the school year and 8 hours per week during the summer. Explorers must also participate in one hospital service project and at least one community outreach event including: Health Fairs, Youth Education Events, Blood Drives, and more.

Activities during the post meetings may include: IV prep and starting of IVs, Medication Draw, IO-Drill, Lab Cultures, Tourniquet, Tour of Ambulance Base and Helipad.

Spots are limited, 25 Applicants will be accepted into the program. Applications will be accepted two times a year: Summer and Fall

Summer 2024 Application will be open April 1, 2024 – May 5, 2024.

Fall 2024 Application will be open July 22, 2024 – August 16, 2024.

Certified President’s Volunteer Service Award Organization

Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center and Sunrise Children’s Hospital is an official certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

  • Volunteer Eligibility: United States citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States (i.e., green card holder)
  • Completes eligible service within a 12–month period (for annual Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards) and over a lifetime (for Lifetime Achievement Awards)

Hours Required to Earn Awards vary in each Age Group. 

Please note that by submitting an application, you are not automatically registered as a volunteer. The application process may take up to 4-6 weeks.

  2. Once a completed application has been reviewed, a time will be established for an in-person interview with the Volunteer Supervisor.
  3. Acceptance into the volunteer program is contingent upon a complete application, a background check, drug test screening, proof of COVID 19 vaccination and a Quntiferon TB test
  4. Once you have successfully completed the onboarding steps, you will attend a required hospital orientation.
  5. After your orientation is complete, the Volunteer supervisor will set up your first day of volunteering
  • The requirement that we have is a minimum of (1) 4 hour shift of volunteering per week and to complete a minimum of 100 hours in total.
  • Shifts are typically: 8:00 am – 12:00 pm, 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm, 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm
  • Volunteer opportunities are available 7 days a week.

Of course, we would like to keep you after you finish the 100 hours.

  • Our primary form of communication is through e-mail, so please be sure to check your e-mail often.
  • Eight hours of orientation will be provided and you will need to be present for the entire time.
  • You will also receive on-site training in the department that you are assigned to.
  • Each year, all volunteers must complete a re-training on hospital policies and procedures.
